THINGS TO DO 1 - FIJI

Hey, just had a few ideas for you to find out more about things I discovered on my journey. I don't want to do all the work.

  • If Fiji has 300 islands and people live on 100, how many islands are empty? Supposing there are 332 and 110 have people on them, how many empty now?
  • Find an atlas and see where India is. How near is it to Fiji? When the people came over, there were no planes so they had to come by boat. It was a long journey for the Indo-Fijians' ancestors
  • Lots of them came to work growing sugar. Try and find some pictures which show a sugar cane plant and how do you get the sugar from it?
  • Fijians call their houses bures. Can you think of some other names that people use for homes? I can think of cottage and apartment. See if you can think of ten more.
  • Ask an adult if you can have some fruit or vegetables and then try and arrange them on a plate as neatly as the Fijians do. It is quite hard; my ones keep falling down. If you want, you can send me a picture.
  • Next time you go shopping, look at the names of all the different fruit and vegetables. If you can write them down. Then find out which ones grow in your country and even, if you are really clever, where the other ones come from
  • Did you see the picture of the sula Ev was wearing. See if you can find a piece of material and tie it around your waist. How does it look? Fijians can also wear it without tying it. They just wrap it around and fold it over. I can't do it, can you try?
  • Let's say that the five boys I saw playing with tops each have five tops. How many tops are there all together?
  • The boys drew a circle on the ground and put one top in it. You can draw a circle on paper or on the ground. A circle looks a bit like the world doesn't it? So one boy has given you all his five tops, isn't he nice? Now draw a top at the top of your circle. This is the north. Draw one at the bottom and this is the south. On the left side you can draw one and it is in the west and on the rght side it is in the east. North, South, East and West are known as the points of the compass and tell us directions. If you can remember that north is the top I have a little secret to help you remember the others. Think of Never Eat Soapy Water which begin with the letters NESW and so it goes North, East, South and West. I bet soapy water would be horrible don't you?
  • If you draw the fifth top exactly between the north and east tops, on the outside of the circle, it is said to be north east. What do you think it would be if you drew it between the north and the west one, the south and the east one and the south and the west one?
  • I told you I hate rubbish and you could help to make me happy. Go out around your home and try and clear up any rubbish you see. Take an adult with you to help and maybe some friends. You could even draw some posters before you go and call it the "Make Teddy Happy" collection. Thank you.
  • I love the coconut and the palm tree. If you live near a palm tree you could probably survive without nearly anything else. See what you can find out about them. See if they sell coconut milk in a shop near you? Try and think of what other parts of the tree or the coconut might be useful. Is there any other plant you know like this?
  • Four coconut trees each have six coconuts on them. How many coconuts have you got? And if each coconut contains one litre of coconut water and you need to drink three litres a day, how long could you survive with just these four trees.
  • TEDDY'S FANTASTIC TREASURE HUNT

On this page, for each country we visit I am going to give you a special clue which you can find out by reading my blogs. You will need to put all the clues together and then send me the answer. Fiji is your first clue. Richard says we might be able to give out some prizes so I want to do it too.

The first clue. You need to find the capital of Fiji. It was the place where I first saw Fijian food. Then take the first letter of that word and keep it till you get the next clue from Tonga.

    SOME ANSWERS

  • First time there would be 200 empty islands and the second time 222.
  • The five boys would have 25 tops all together.
  • The tops would be in the north west, south east and south west. Now you know 8 compass points.

  • 24 coconuts altogether and you could survive for eight days.
