The Tongan flag was adopted in 1875. It is one of the world's oldest flags. The law made at that time says it can never be changed.
The red background stands for the blood of Jesus that he shed on the cross. Tonga is a very Christian country. The white stands for purity.
Once Tonga had a flag with a red cross in the middle but this was too similar to the Red Cross organisation so they changed it.
